Business and Leisure

It is common for a  businessman to travel a lot, however, I am an exemption. I am not fond of traveling however, here’s a thing, I happen to visit the Midwestern part of the country to meet some clients. I am traveling solely for business purpose.

I noticed that this part of the country has been the haven of corn toss game. You will notice that every corner of the street, there are children competing with other players. Even child at heart is playing this sport. My curiosity grew bigger as I roam around the place.I wonder who brought this very simple game (even if I haven’t tried it) here and why it is such  a hit? This is a business opportunity! I said to myself.

I found out that its origin has been controversial in some way. There are many other competing claims as to the origin of corntoss in the United States, and one of this is that the game first appeared in the city of Cincinnati, Ohio. So what makes this claim special and worth noting? Well, Cincinnati is a major hub of German immigrants back before the United States Civil War. Yes, people from Germany came to settle in the city of Cincinnati, and with them, they brought a game that is simply too similar to Kueperman’s tossing game to be ignored. Most cornhole historians point to this as a strong link to the Kueperman story, in a sense corroborating and confirming that corn toss had indeed come from Germany and brought to American soil by German immigrants.

It’s curious that despite the anti-German sentiment during the two World Wars and the subsequent attempt by German-Americans to disguise their German heritage for their safety, corn hole still remained a game widely played in the Midwest. It’s a good thing, though, because the post-war generation has something to enjoy playing during a lazy Sunday or Saturday afternoon in their lawn or their friends’ backyards. So, no matter what the history of corn toss is, what matters is the fact that we still have something with which we could pass the time with on a weekend with friends and perhaps even family.

Being a business-minded that I am, I came to a conclusion that I might establish a new business out of this game. What do you think?
